About the work: If anyone ever asked me where my roots were from, I wouldn’t know how exactly to answer. I am Israeli, this I know for sure. I grew up in Israel, I’ve served in the Israeli army. I live in Israel, through good times and through tough ones. I am part of this nation’s DNA, yet still, it is a very young nation. My roots spiral deeper and wider. The German heritage from my mother’s side has had a strong presence in my life, as does the Romanian heritage from my dad’s. So I am also German and Romanian, as far as my roots and upbringing go. Aside of this, I am of course Jewish. I am secular Jew, to be exact. I am also gay. It is hard to determine which parts or groups truly define who we are. We might have mixed feelings about one identity or another. At times I feel whole with being Israeli, or of German descent, or Jewish, or gay. At other times I feel like belonging to these groups does not represent me at all. Belonging to a group or a nation can truly be a wonderful thing – there is a sense of a community, of tradition, of care, a joint history, a home to be part of. It also brings with it group pride. Group pride has a tendency to slowly separate between people. It approves and disapproves, it accepts and rejects, it enables a group to look at another person as “The Other”. And when a group does this, there suddenly is a clear Us and a clear Them. Once we reach beyond that line, the line of Them, the shared human link between all of us can easily by erased. One step further, and the road to collective insanity is securely paved. This exists everywhere. This elusive risk exists in any nation, religion or group. For this reason, Glashäuser is a global work. We cannot escape our identity. I cannot escape being Jewish. or German. or Israeli. None of us can escape the history of the past. We can though, choose our role in the history in the making. This work is about all of us.
